It’s always good news when another state proposes a ban on shark fin products. In Illinois, a shark fin bill, HB 4119, has been proposed and is being sponsored by Sara Feigenholtz. Feigenholtz worked with the Humane Society to create the bill and if it passes it would take effect in July 2013. The bill is like others already passed in Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii, and it would ban the sale, trade, and possession of shark fin products.
Similar legislation has also been proposed in Florida and New York. The shark fin industry is responsible for the horrific deaths of nearly 100 million sharks a year. The fins are used in the traditional shark fin soup, which is a Chinese delicacy.
